I have had the pleasure of introducing my friends to some of my favorite films. Although it can be a challenge not to laugh prematurely or otherwise indicate that something might be coming up, it is so worth it to watch the dawning of understanding cross their faces.
The first time I remember doing this was for the movie The Sixth Sense.
I saw it soon after its release. When my friends returned from overseas, the film was still in the theaters. I am so impressed that the secret of the film hadn’t been publicly announced. My friends went into the film simply having heard it was good.
It was fun seeing the film again and catching the clues I’d missed on the first time through. As the big reveal neared, I started watching my friends instead of the film. I was able to see the exact moment when they got it.
One of my favorite introductions was when I invited Hillary over my place to see The Full Monty.
Hillary always wants to go into a film without knowing what it is about, so I simply told her it was a wonderful British comedy.
When we got to the point where the title is explained, she looked over at me and said, “Really?” I paused the video and told her that I couldn’t have asked her to come over and see a movie about male strippers.
“But it’s not! They are only strippers by circumstance!”
We had such a wonderful time. This happened right after I quit my first attempt at grad school, so having a big laugh and a huge weight off my shoulders made it all the more memorable.
As I was watching the Academy Awards with Ms M this year, I realized that I hadn’t seen a single film last year. Normally I see a few, but last year was completely move theater free. How will I have more of these experiences of sharing a favorite movie if I’m not watching any?
I vowed then and there that I would remedy that. Then again, we are one-third of the way through the year and I still haven’t even looked at the listings. My words and actions are not matching.
Have you ever had the privilege of introducing a movie to a friend? or Are there any movies worth seeing right now?
