Last weekend, one of my friends held a birthday party with a theme: Shoulder Pads and Pleated Pants. No wonder I am still so stuck in the 80s – my friends are, too!!!! I love it! The price of admission was dressing up in one of those two (or both) items.
Up until the night before, I thought I wouldn’t be able to go because I had nothing to wear and no time to go to a thrift store. I was sad. While I know they really wouldn’t have turned me away, I didn’t want to be the only person not in costume – which was a big deal to me. DH2U then came up with the idea of making shoulder pads.
At first I didn’t like the idea, especially since he was talking big pieces of foam. Then two things popped into my head. First, I remembered that in the 80s there was a shoulder pad that you could attach to a bra strap in case your clothing item didn’t come with (enough) built-in shoulders.
Second, out of the corner of my eye I noticed some of air packs peaking out of an Amazon box. An idea was born!
I took two socks, worked the air packs into them, and then CAREFULLY attached safety pins to the socks. Someone thinking it through probably would have attached the safety pins before putting the highly pop-able air packs into the socks, but we all know that is not me!
Then I attached them to my bra strap and put on my shirt. At least I tried to put on my shirt. It got caught on the shoulder pads, and I got stuck in my shirt. Nope, no picture of that! DH2U released me from my 80s prison, and I continued to get ready.
Both of us went to the party wearing highly exaggerated shoulder pads.

It was great to be thought as so creative when I had nothing to do with it!!!
It was such a fun night. I’m so glad I was able to use a very practical solution to solve a very 80s problem.
Shoulder Pads or Pleated Pants: Which way would you have gone? or What was the last creative solution you came up with?
You didn’t mention that you and your sweetheart won the costume contest! 🙂 You both looked SO cute with your big, big shoulders! 🙂

Thanks, Amy, for throwing these fabulous costume parties that inspire my creative juices … which normally strike last minute!

That’s a really creative solution. You just prove that when you use your brain you can always make stuff. In a way, your story kind of reminds me of that old show, MacGuyver. All you needed was to say that you fixed something with duct tape. Anyway, there’s your 80s reference for the day.

It was rather MacGuyver! I really should watch those shows again. I wonder how well they’ve aged. Thanks for the 80s thought of the day.

This sounds like a great idea for a party! How much fun is that? I would have gone for the shoulder pads, too. Pleated pants (especially jeans) make me twitch a little.

I know I used to own pleated pants. I remember having a pair of pleated jeans! What I don’t remember is when the pleats went out of style. I bet they’ll be making a come back soon.
