I think I’ve been taken over by the pod people. I look like me, but inside a switch has been flipped and my brain is not functioning correctly, and no, it has nothing to do with my latest bout of insomnia. I have lost the will to read books to the end.
So far this year I have only read three books cover to cover. That puts me two books behind already in my reading challenge. Actually, I have been reading, but I can’t bring myself to push through to the end. Once a character does something monumentally stupid, I’m out of there. I can’t take the tension the poor choice causes.
In thinking about it, without tension there really can’t be much of a plot. Normally if I switch to audio books I can break through these impasses. This year, however, even that method of delivery isn’t working for me.
I’d been looking forward to reading I Think I Love You, set in the 1970s whose protagonist is a preteen Welsh girl obsessed with David Cassidy.
I received it in the audio book format, and I was loving it until the main character, Petra, did something unforgivable, especially since she had so many easy ways out. I popped out the disk and returned it to the library the same day.
I don’t fully understand why misbehaviors are bothering me so much. There are times when I can only handle watching suspenseful shows every blue moon. That, however, is always tied to when I’m living in stressful circumstances, which fortunately is not the case now.
I can tell you about one of my rare book finishes this year. It was about as unstressful as can be: As you Wish by Cary Elwes. I read it cover to cover in three sittings.
Published to coordinate with the 25th anniversary of The Princess Bride, it is feel good story about one of my all time favorite films. No dirt was dished, and only the rare not-so-bad decisions were discussed, so it was basically perfect for me right now. If you love the movie, you should read it. Curiously, though, my favorite line from the film didn’t make the book, “You keep using that word. I don’t think that word means what you think it means.”
Has anyone else been taken over by the pod people? or What is your favorite line from The Princess Bride?
