Running with Scissors

Back in the early 1990s, there was a car commercial that had the announcer saying, “Stay between the lines. The lines are our friends”, as the driver of the car then proceeds to not stay between the lines.

Once again, I can’t remember what company it was for, but I do remember wondering why someone would feel the need to violate traffic laws.

If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you’d know that I’m really not a rule breaker. When I have occasionally broken the rules, to me those occasions always felt about as dangerous as Frazier was in this clip from Cheers:

I wonder if they had to have the paramedics on the set in case he hurt himself!

What brought all of this up was my mentioning “running with scissors” in relation to my desire to hike alone.  Barbara, over at The Empty Nest Mom, mentioned that it was a need for danger. To me, it’s an innocent adventure that really can’t do any harm, sort of like them saying “You’ll put an eye out” when you say you want a Red Rider BB Gun. Then again, whenever I go hiking I have to pass by this sign:

Mountain Lion Warning

And I do need to conveniently forget that at least two women bicycling alone have been killed by mountain lions in the county. And we all know what happens in Christmas Story with the bb gun. Maybe I am secretly a rebel! I like that idea, even though I was completely bored by Rebel Without a Cause. Our high school teacher was being super nice showing it to us, and I felt so bad for not liking it.

What actions do you do that you know you shouldn’t, but really aren’t that dangerous … or are they? Any suggestions as to what I should rebel against? or Have you ever watched a movie that you really wanted to like but didn’t?

  1. Have you ever seen the episode of Frasier where Niles is getting ready for a date? I think it’s a Valentine’s Day episode. It’s one of those great physical comedy ones – he burns his pants with the iron, cuts his finger and passes out from the sight of his own drop of blood, and much more. But the best moment has to be when he goes running to get the pair of scissors and then slows down to walk with them instead of run. I think it may be my favorite episode.

  2. Haha, I remember that episode of Cheers. Frasier was always one of my favorite characters from that show. You raise a good point though. Is something really dangerous or does it just appear that way.

When I was in Morocco, I befriended a local. He showed me around and we had lunch together. Then he showed me where he lived. I felt safe the entire time and didn’t feel as if I was in danger at all. Some people would think it was too dangerous, but I got a great experience out of it.

I have to say that the idea of getting attacked by mountain lions would make me think twice. But I would probably do it – I would just be safe and keep extra attention while I was out there.

    1. Your Moroccan adventure sounds wonderful. Having a guide makes it much safer. He wasn’t going to take you to places where you would be in danger, but if you went out exploring on your own, you could easily stumble where you shouldn’t be.

For too long in my life, my level of perceived risk well surpassed reality for basically every activity. I’m so glad that I think I am now more inline with what is really there. At least I hope I haven’t gone completely the other way. But since mountain lions have a range of hundreds of miles, the odds of one stalking me at any given time are quite low.
