The Simpsons

Once again I need to thank The Bloggess for inspiration. One of her recent posts was titled “We go together like teenagers and low self-esteem.” When I first saw it, I was sure my resulting post would be about how much happier I am the older I get. Then again, I’ve already touched on that idea. I love the fact that that is true.

As I sat down to write this post, I realized that her quote sounded a lot like one of my (many) favorite Simpsons quotations: Making teenagers depressed is like shooting fish in a barrel.

The Simpsons started when I was in high school. I actively disliked the show then. It seemed too full of catch phrases and not particularly funny. It was many years later when I started watching, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

In England, where The Simpsons airs all the time, I found a fellow Simpsons fan. Over time we discovered that the football riot episode never aired there. What strange censorship!

Only once in my life have I ever gone to a midnight showing of a new movie release, and that was for The Simpsons Movie.

The Simpsons Movie

It was so much fun! Okay, I might have dozed a little towards the end, but that is what happens when a morning person tries to do late night activities … and it was dark.

There was a time in my life when I had a Simpsons quotation to suit any and every occasion. I still often think of them, but I’m less prone to sharing them. I’ve already quoted Lisa’s need for external validation. My two other all time favorites are, “Here’s to alcohol: the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems” and ” I didn’t think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows.”

Do I have any fellow Simpsons fans out there? or What (if any) movie have you seen at the opening midnight showing?

  1. I love the Simpsons. The writing is brilliant and hilarious and I LOVE the “cameo” appearances. One thing I don’t understand, however, is how Lisa has kept her sanity amid the dysfunction for all of these years.

    1. With the exception of the ethical vegetarianism, I am secretly a grown up version of Lisa Simpson. I also have wondered how she has coped for 25 years living in that household.

  2. Like you, I did not care for The Simpsons when it started. I can’t say I’m a fan even now, mostly because I just don’t watch anything with any regularity. But I have seen more than a few episodes and find some of the pop culture references fantastic. A particular favorite is the one with the parody of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven.”
Midnight movies…it’s been a while. When I was a teenager, our local movie theater ran midnight movies and I wasn’t allowed to go – no idea why. Maybe my parents thought it was for thugs or something. (And it kinda was…LOL) Anyway, a midnight opening of something was somewhere back in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I remember that it was loooooooong and I fell asleep. Pretty sure that was the last time I attempted a midnight opening. I eventually saw the whole movie at home. In my pajamas. Not at midnight. 😀

    1. The Raven episode was wonderful!!!!

I fell asleep during the Lord of the Rings, and that was during the daytime. I can’t imagine trying any of that series at midnight. It was brave of you to even attempt it!

I’m with you in the idea of pjs on the couch.

    1. I’ve tried watching American Dad and Family Guy, and they simply don’t do it for me. Archer, on the other hand, is so wrong on every level, yet is utterly hilarious.
