Strutting My Stuff

While on my neighborhood walks, I normally welcome the silence to help me think. I have discovered something that helps that time fly by when I am merely out for exercise: 80’s Cardio on Pandora.

Pandora Workout Stations

It won’t be a surprise to anyone that I love my 80s music, but what might be a surprise is how long it too me to find this glorious station!

The other day a well loved song came on, and my workout became pure pleasure.

Yeah they was dancin’ and singin’ and movin’ to the groovin’
And just when it hit me somebody turned around and shouted
Play that funky music white boy

There I was strutting my way down the street, arms twisting, and a HUGE smile on my face. Just then, someone walked out of her front door. In the past I would have pulled a Hugh Grant in Love Actually and tried to make the arm movements look more normal/natural. Not that day. If anything I grooved a little more and my smile grew even larger. I want to think that it was my smiling that caused her to smile back. Even if it was my dance/walk, I brightened her day. Good on me.

After the song was over, my mind started jumping all over the place. It was aided in finally settling on one by Queen coming on. One of the first continuing education classes that I did for CERT was CPR and First Aid. The new CPR training is compression oriented, and they teach you to do the compressions to the beat of “Staying Alive,” which is 100 beats per minute.

When I got back from the class, I Googled for other songs that would work. I will never say anything bad about the BeeGees, and I love that song, but if I ever (G-d forbid) have to use this, I want to have more than one song stuck in my head. My Googling results made me laugh. Another song with the perfect timing is “Another One Bites the Dust.” The site that talked about it did mention that it was probably wise not to sing that one out loud while performing CPR: People might get the wrong idea!

Has anyone else ever been caught dancing down the street? or Who else finds the idea of doing chest compressions but not the breathing strange? Does it make you more likely to help a stranger?

  1. Good on you, indeed! I started tapping my feet just looking at those lyrics, could imagine some platform shoes and doing a 2-step, one step backwards – a twirl, a fist pump. Why walk when you can dance? You strut girl, you strut!

  2. You brightened someone’s day with your grooving and smiling. That’s pretty awesome. Yeah, I’ve been caught dancing before. I was in my living room and a next door neighbor happened to be across the way and saw me. I think it was the erratic movement that was going on because they don’t normally look in, but it was kind of funny actually. They started laughing which made me laugh too. It was a good time all around. I think fun like this can be contagious.

    1. How wonderful that you were able to make your neighbor’s smile. I’m glad that you also found it humorous – so often self-consciousness takes over and it is simply embarrassing.

  3. I almost needed you to perform the compressions on me as the image of the “rescuer” humming Another One Bites the Dust during the rescue fully settled into my brain. It’s all about the bedside manner!
I can’t believe that I just had this same conversation with a friend of mine today. We both decided that Yes, it would make us more inclined to try ,though neither of us felt very confident in our CPR skill with or without the breathing.

    1. You are so right about the bedside manner. I doubt someone unconscious would really mind what I was humming, and I’d be very attentive once they were back on this side of the living.

I know the rescue breathing is a real put off – at least for performing on a stranger. Disease and simply “cooties” are big concerns.
