I Carried a Watermelon

I am not a girly girl.  My tummy turns when I see trailers for romantic comedies. Give me a good action/adventure or indie comedy, with the occasional sci fi flick thrown in for good measure, and I am a happy movie goer.

Needless to say, I was shocked when I recently compiled my list of all-time favorite films only to discover that they are:

Princess Bride Movie Poster Love Actually Movie Poster LA Story Movie Poster
Blazing Saddles Movie Poster Dirty Dancing Movie Poster

Inconceivable!  How are 3 of my top five films rom coms, with a romantic drama thrown in for good measure?!?!?  [And how is Dirty Dancing categorized as a romantic drama, Netflix?!?!?!?] At first I was horrified at the contradiction, yet just thinking about those films make me smile.

What makes a movie re-watchable to me is quotable lines.  I’ve had entire IM sessions based solely on quotes from films, occasionally all from the same film.  (And yes, I realize I really do need to get a life!)  Each of these films carries with it a sense of nostalgia – the story behind my seeing it for the first time, the person/people I shared the experience with, where I was in my life – and upon viewing them again, my heart still wants to burst at the potential of what is unveiling itself before me on screen.  I feel sorry for anyone watching these films with me if it is their initial viewing. Warning: I giggle before the funny bits!

Maybe I don’t know myself as well as I thought I did and maybe labels don’t matter as much as I give them credit for …. sounds like an idea for another blog post!  What I do know is that I want a movie that makes me laugh, warms my heart, and gives me hope.  Any movie suggestions that fit those requirements …. or …  what are your most memorable (yet no more than PG rated, please) movie lines?

  1. From these films some of my favorite lines are:

“I don’t think that means what you think that means”
“I’ll give you anything you ask for – as long as it’s not something I don’t want to give. ”
“Oh no! I can’t. This is how mummy met daddy!”
“A wed wose. How womantic. ”
“Now, you’ll hurt me if you don’t trust me, all right?”

and one from a close runner up: “Lord loves a workin’ man; don’t trust whitey; see a doctor and get rid of it. “

  2. Four of mine:
    – “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
    – “What senses do we lack that we cannot see another world all around us?”
    – “You do not take from this universe. It grants you what it will.”
    – “The mystery of life isn’t a problem to solve, but a reality to experience.”
